A'ight Pokemon nerds! It’s time to give the very first Pokegirl protagonist some love, because frankly, the bullshit on her (and Lyra for that matter) has gone far enough. These days she rarely ever appears in fan art grouping all girl protags together. You have Leaf, Lyra, May, Dawn, Hilda, Rosa, Serena, New Sun and Moon Girl, but wait! One of these things is not like the others, where’s Kris? The very first female protagonist!

I’m dead serious, it’s gotten to the point where you had to do some digging to get Kris involved. I asked some Pokegirl artists (who I won’t mention names for their sake) for survey reasons and their answers were about the same;

“Who?”

“It wouldn’t be a point now, because we have Lyra now!”

“Kris only appeared in one game while other female protagonists appeared in two or three, nobody remembers Kris now but they remember Lyra, and it’s important to keep up with the times when drawing characters, especially ones that are relevant now to get recognition as an artist.”

“I wanted to but I am scared to anger Lyra’s fans because they don’t like Crystal because Lyra replaced her.” (I have gotten about three more of the exact same reason)

Basically because Pokemon fans are pissed off at Lyra for unintentionally replacing Kris, as such, some Lyra fans, if not all, automatically assume anyone who likes Kris, hates Lyra and vice versa. Well that’s got to stop because both girls are equally awesome, and this clash of the pokegirls has to end because it’s still going after 6-7 years!

“Not a real protagonist (she only appeared in Crystal)”
Okay, I wanna know what exactly qualifies a character to be a real protagonist, other than you playing as them! If Kris is a playable character in the main series games, than she is in fact a real protagonist. Kris and Lyra are totally different protagonists and here’s why;

She appeared in only Crystal, yes, but again, she was the first ever female protagonist, game wise. Before people only had Red and Ethan to play as, but along came Kris and because of her, girls back then got to be the very best without being told they couldn’t because there were no girls to play as. But nooooo she only appeared in Crystal, she didn’t reappear in the Gen II remakes, so she isn’t a “real” protagonist. If we’re going by that logic Nate and Rosa aren’t “real” protagonists because they only appear in a sequel to Black and White.

“Anime counterpart is too girly”
JFC, this is probably the most bullshit excuse to put down Kris - actually scratch that- ANY character for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, IT’S OKAY TO BE GIRLY! Not every female has to be a rugged tough-ass tomboy in pants to be interesting! I know a lot of Pokemon fans that shit on Serena for being too “girly.” Even then, the anime isn’t the only source of good characters, have you read Pokemon Special/Adventures? That is some good shit. Manga characters like Yellow, Green/Blue, and Sapphire are some of the most well developed characters out there, Crystal is no exception. As for game counterparts, all protagonists of the game are typically one note, they’re avatar designs, like the ones you see in Fire Emblem; Red, for example is an avatar whose dialogue consists of nothing but dots (“….”). Sorry Red fans, but he’s kind of the same.

Second, I believe it isn’t fair to judge a character based on their anime counterparts because not everyone has watched the anime, which is unfaithful to actual game canon. This is the kind of shit that I don’t get. Up until Black and white, I never watched a single episode of the anime, so I never understood why people obsessed over characters like Misty and bitched about Iris when the latter has more character regardless. Again, protagonists in the games are essentially avatars, it’s up to the player to give them a different personality or a different headcanon, because we project ourselves with the character. Anyway, anime counterpart =/= game counterpart.

“Only used as a token to bash on Lyra even though nobody cared about her.”

Okay, this is the big reason why there’s so much drama between both Kris fans and Lyra fans. And yes I have to agree on both sides, no one gave zero shits about Kris, but for a lot of reasons. It wasn’t that Kris wasn’t a bad protagonist per se or that Lyra had every intention to replace her, it’s just the timing of the localization between Generations was off.
If you were an American kid growing up in the early 2000’s, you’d be excited for new Pokemon games, only to realize years later that the Japanese fans got their hands on the game way before anyone else outside of Japan did. For instance, Crystal came out in 2001 (2000 in Japan), about a year AFTER Gold and Silver were released, and about a year later (or two everywhere else), we were introduced to Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, hastily migrating from the GBC to the GBA and all eyes were drawn to both Brendan and May as the new protagonists to gush about. That’s why a lot of people don’t really recognize Kris that much, and Gen II didn’t really become relevant until the remakes that were released 9 years later. As such, the developers decided to either revamp Kris’s design or create a different character. Enter Lyra. Once she appeared, everyone decided to jump on the hate wagon and bash Lyra and praise Kris. So it’s not Lyra’s fault for making it seem like she replaced Kris, and Kris herself shouldn’t be pushed off to the side or be given undeserving praise to bash on a character hated by the fans just because of sloppy localization.

“Not as pretty as other female trainers now”

This is a hypocritical statement honestly, because half the time, Pokemon fans have something to shit on to the other Pokegirls. For example, Lyra’s getup has often been criticized for being a childish look alike of Mario, Hilda has been called a slut from time to time because of her booty shorts, people complained about Dawn being fan service material for her miniskirt (especially in the anime), and even some Hoennbabies on GameFAQ’s bitched and moaned about May in her ORAS getup. So really, not liking Kris for her looks is one thing, but saying the other girls were prettier when knowing that not everyone else is on the same page is just plain silly.

That about wraps up my defense for Kris. Sorry it was a super long defense, I just get really frustrated that people think I hate Lyra because I like Kris, which isn’t the case at all. Hope you guys have a great day, and hey! Peace and Love everyone!
